If you are a member of their program, they will fly you to a hospital of your choice, assuming you are more than 150 miles from home and there is a nearby landing strip to pick you up at. The Birmingham, Alabama-based company, underwritten by Lloyds of London, uses a network of air medical providers and can get you, a family member, or in the case of a family accident, all of your family to a care center of your choice.
The typical cost for a domestic air ambulance trip is around $20,000 and international trips can be as much as $75,000.
An individual plan is $205 for the year, and $325 for a family. They also have a plan for students who are travelling.
Our take: if you travel to remote locations, combine exotic travel with adventure sport (kitesail in Costa Rica or heliski in Chile) then this looks like reasonable insurance – especially for the whole family. The student plan also looks like a decent option if you have a college kid spending a year wandering around Africa. Or Canada for that matter! (just a joke)
