When big-name fashion designers and interior design stars sign on to create stylish interiors for resort real estate, the result is bound to be a community of second homes with serious wow-factor. So, where are the fashion industry trendsetters heading next? Donatella Versace and Georgio Armani are both designing interiors for real estate developments in Dubai. The Palazzo Versace Resort will open in 2009, and the Armani Residences in the Burj Dubai are set to open their doors by the end of 2008.
If Dubai seems too far off, fear not. Several designers, from the interior variety to those in the world of fashion, are looking at new vacation developments a bit closer to home. Here’s a look three upcoming developments where style icons have recently made their mark.
Kelly Wearstler: Viceroy Anguilla
Situated on 35 acres, the Viceroy Anguilla residences will feature distinctive interiors designed by the award-winning interior designer and style icon Kelly Wearstler. Wearstler has worked on numerous hotels, residences and yacht interiors, and also designed a home accessories line sold in Bergdorf Goodman. Viceroy Anguilla will feature 140 beachfront and bluff top villas, town homes and condo residences, with an exclusive 45 ownership opportunities available in the current final release. Phased opening will begin in winter 2008 and continue throughout 2009. Properties range from $850,000 to $7 million.
“Overall, I was inspired by the tranquil beach setting,” Wearstler has said of her work at Viceroy Anguilla. “In designing the property, we used textiles and techniques from all over the world, including hand-carved wood pieces from Asia, hammered metalwork from India and beaded artwork from Africa, which offer a visual contrast with the modern architecture.”
Roberto Cavalli: Mareazul, Playa del Carmen
Mareazul, the first phase of the 561-acre development Grand Coral Riviera Maya, is a 300-unit luxury beachfront community. The development will be home to a beach club designed by Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli, most noted for draping celebrities like Victoria Beckham and Jennifer Lopez in his collection of exotic prints.
Mareazul, just south of Cancun in Mexico’s Mayan Riveria, will feature a restaurant, spa, fitness center and Nick Price-designed 18-hole golf course. Two-, three- and four-bedroom residences will range from $525,000 to $1.4 million. If Cavalli’s interior designs are anything like his runway shows, expect a glamorous, jet-set-inspired blend of bold colors and exotic prints.
Oscar de la Renta: The Estates at PuntaCana Resort & Club, Dominican Republic
Co-investors Frank Ranieri, Ted Kheel, Julio Inglesias and Oscar de la Renta have developed three luxury communities, collectively called The Estates, with the same commitment to style and privacy that they adhered to during the construction of their own Estates homes. Homeowners have full access to the 15,000-acre PuntaCana Resort & Club, including the La Cana golf course, spa and more than four miles of white sand beaches. Corales, the most deluxe of the three Estates communities, offers 140 home sites starting at $1.8 million.
Oscar de la Renta, a native of the Dominican Republic, used his own elegant furniture designs and the serene color palate of the island when creating the villa interiors. “I wanted guests to feel as if they were in my home,” the designer explained in Vogue.
