Boutique Hotels Are Leading the Way with Green Meeting Packages

Hotel Vitale Meeting RoomCorporate waste from off-site meetings—loads of paper, high energy usage, uneaten food—adds up to a big environmental faux pas. So now, some boutique hotel groups are offering “green meeting” packages to their corporate clients to help reduce their footprint—and cash in on the consumer power of the environmentally conscious.

Hotel Vitale in San Francisco, part of the Joie de Vivre group, recently announced a new program that offers eco-friendly group and individual transportation; sustainable, local organic food and beverage selections; paperless digital writing pads and the option of “green” spa treatments at their on-site spa.

Kimpton is another California-born boutique brand that’s carving out a spot for themselves in this niche. They donate a portion of proceeds from their meeting bookings to the Trust for Public Land, and also offer meeting-goers fair-trade coffee and catering with organic, locally-grown food through their EarthCare package.

It’s good to see these smaller brands taking a step in the right direction on behalf of the luxury hospitality industry. Hopefully we’ll see some of the bigger players follow suit soon.
