Homebrew: Ethanol Fuel in Your Own Garage

EFuel100 MicrofuelerAs gas prices continue their unbridled rise (I biked past $4.39 unleaded today), wouldn’t it be nice if you could just produce your own fuel at home? Hoping for a Beverly-Hillbillies-esque oil strike is pretty far-fetched, but the ability to make your own fuel and fill up in your own garage is no dream. A company called E-Fuel is now selling a combination ethanol brewer and pump called the EFuel100 Microfueler, enabling you to turn your garage into a personal gas station.

An increasing number of cars are now capable of running on E85, a mixture of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. Recent studies have shown that standard cars can safely run E55 (55% ethanol) or E65 (65%) with no modifications. And now, you can brew it in your own home. Creating the ethanol is as simple as connecting the MicroFueler to water and electricity and adding a pre-packaged mixture of sugar and yeast. The machine can then pump the non-fossil fuel into your car and you’re ready to go. Ignoring the cost of the machine (which can total near $10,000, but also qualifies for the ethanol producer tax break of about $3,000), Ethanol can be produced for about a buck a gallon. Maybe go in on one with your neighbors to offset the machine’s price, and you can all share in the environmentally-friendly fuel.
