As hybrid cars move from being a niche product to a mainstream phenomenon, access to driving one becomes greater. Prime example: Hybrid rental. Maybe you just want to test one out, or perhaps you plan on doing quite a bit of driving during your trip and want to reduce your fuel consumption. Whatever your reason, major rental agencies that rent hybrids are becoming increasingly common, though not every agency nor every airport will have you covered.
EV Rental Cars (EV is short for Environmental Vehicle) is the only “environmental” car rental agency in the U.S. They rent hybrids at Las Vegas, Phoenix and most major California airports. Since opening in 1998 EV claims to have “prevented more than 100 tons of air pollution and passed on to its customers more than $1 million in fuel costs savings.”
The major players are rapidly increasing the number of hybrid vehicles in their fleets as well, though in smaller cities there may be just a few dozen total hybrids for rent, so reserve well in advance. At present, Enterprise has a total of 5,000 hybrid vehicles in their US fleet and Avis has 2,500. Hertz has unveiled a Green collection that numbers 35,000 vehicles and is available at 50 U.S. airports, though they include all vehicles that get an EPA Highway Fuel Efficiency rating of 28 Miles or more per gallon, which is the standard fuel efficiency for every new model car. Their fleet of hybrids numbers around 4,000.
Advantage plans to turn 100% of its fleet green and will offer exclusively hybrids within two years, but at present they don’t even offer hybrid rentals. And all of these numbers are just tiny fractions of fleets that are made of hundreds of thousands of vehicles, mind you. That’s not exactly enough to go around since a gallon of gas began topping $4 and hybrid rentals are expected to increase drastically this summer.
The largest quantity and widest variety of hybrids are in major metropolitan areas along either coast. The Toyota Prius is by far the most common hybrid model, although Chevy Tahoe, Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry hybrids can also be rented through some agencies. Rates range from $5-20 higher than standard car rentals depending on the model.
