Between the Sheets: Bamboo or Organic Cotton?

Organic Bedding from AmenityLooking to get some sustainable shut-eye? You might have to change your sheets. No, we don’t mean doing the laundry; we’re talking about giving your bed a makeover. Since we typically spend about one-third of our lives sleeping, it’s likely you’re absorbing and breathing in some unhealthy toxins and chemicals if you’re heading to bed on a conventional mattress and sheets.

Even if you’re not ready to invest in an all-organic mattress, making the bed with organic cotton or bamboo sheets can help you reduce your toxic load. Bamboo is a great choice—not only because the grass is a fast-growing and renewable resource, but because once its pulp is turned into fiber, it can be made into super-soft fabric that ventilates and wicks sweat away from the body.

If you’re partial to cotton, choosing organic really makes a difference because a conventionally grown set of cotton sheets consumes about one-and-a-half pounds of chemicals. Organic cotton runs the gamut from sateen to flannel, with a range of thread counts. The common “threads” between bamboo and organnic cotton choices are non-toxic dyes and a lower dose of chemicals.

Here are a few companies that can help you nap au natural:

Anna Sova

This luxury green company has created several decadent organic bedding sets, from the Eco White Collection to its colorful Constantinople Collection. Its organic cotton offerings are high in thread count (think 600), and are milled in Switzerland with 100-percent U.S. organic Pima cotton, and then finished in Italy with eco-safe cotton bleaching and dyeing.

Amenity

This conscious company finishes off its line of soft duvets and shams with modern, earthy prints. Each limited-edition image is printed individually with non-toxic, water-based dyes onto 300-thread-count organically grown and processed cotton.

Viva Terra

Viva Terra carries smooth bamboo sheets in a variety of soft, soothing colors like Flax and Sage. Made from 100-percent bamboo fiber that’s pesticide free, these sheets don’t wrinkle like cotton after being washed and provide a comfy cushion for an eco-friendly night’s sleep.

you can also find bamboo sheets at bed, bath, and beyond. I think the brand is called "Pure Beech". They're great, super soft sheets. we got as a wedding gift. We'll never go back to other sheets again.
