Megayachts Wooed by New Marinas

Yacht Haven GrandeIt’s well known that the number of megayachts on the seas is growing at a rate faster than new docking spaces created. The result is an aquatic parking problem akin to the streets of San Francisco. Luckily for megayacht owners, the number of marinas capable of hosting these grand vessels will significantly increase in the next couple years.

Following the lead of the $200 million Yacht Haven Grande that opened last year in St. Thomas, these new marinas will be destination resorts, featuring luxury hotels, shops, and residences. The varied global locations of these marinas will appeal to explorers who long for a world outside of the Mediterranean. And this is just the beginning. More marinas are in the works in places like Dubai, Cancun, and the Bahamas.

Altamer Marina, Anguilla

Not to be outdone by St. Thomas and St. Kitts, Anguilla will be able to boast a megayacht marina by the end of 2009. Altamer Resort, a luxury villa resort on the island, is partnering with Island Global Yachting, a well-known developer of many international marinas, to create the first marina facility on Anguilla. The marina will feature 101 slips capable of docking yachts up to 300 feet in length. An additional 17 acres will be developed into a luxury hotel, residential space and shops. Plenty to do for visitors who want to wander about on land after exploring the island’s famous coral reefs.

Baltic Bay Marina Kiel, Germany

When warm, tropical breezes become tiresome, megayachts will soon be able to set a course for northern Europe. The MPDI Corporation recently announced the development of the first megayacht marina in the Baltic Sea, at Germany’s Bay of Kiel. Scheduled to open by 2011, the Baltic Bay Marina Kiel is expected to accommodate up to 80 yachts from 82 to 500 feet. The marina will also include a five-star hotel and a promenade with restaurants, bars, cafes, and shops, as well as repair services.

Porto Hussong Resort & Marina, Mexico

Porto Hussong marinaWhen completed in 2011, the Porto Hussong Resort & Marina in Ensenada, Mexico will be the largest megayacht marina on the west coast of the Pacific. Developers expect frequent visitors from nearby San Diego and have ensured that megayachts will have plenty of space. Capable of accommodating 284 yachts, the marina has 76 berths designed for yachts up to 400 feet in length. The resort features a boutique hotel, a private residence club and fully owned seaside condos that start at $700,000. In fact there is so much to do at the resort, guests may forget to return to their yacht.

Fan Pier Cove, Boston

New England brings to mind lobster boats and Boston Whalers, not exactly megayachts. But a new development in Boston may change that. Fan Pier, located in the southern part of the city, is undergoing a $1 billion transformation that includes a 96-slip deep-water marina expected to accommodate megayachts. By 2011, the neighborhood’s 21 acres will be built up with a luxury hotel, residential and office buildings, and a public park. Its close proximity to the heart of Boston is sure to make the Fan Pier Cove marina a summertime favorite, along with the lobster roll.

Island Gardens, Miami

Even though there’s a big world out there, when you get right down to it, Florida is a pretty nice place to take a yacht. Fort Lauderdale is marina central for megayachts, but soon Miami will be a premier destination. The marina at Island Gardens will feature 50 slips specifically designed for megayachts and each dock is angled to capture unobstructed views of downtown Miami. Also part of the $480 million development located on Watson Island in Biscayne Bay are two luxury hotels, fractional residences and of course, spas, restaurants and shops.
