Superyacht bookA megayacht owner already has the biggest and baddest boat around. What else could he or she want after buying the fastest and most technologically advanced vessel? A submarine?

Like any other fine piece of machinery, the numerous pictures end up in glossy coffee table books. But the first book we came across won’t be collecting dustbunnies anytime soon; it costs nearly $4,000.

Enter the tome called Superyachts. The ultimate collector’s item for yacht aficionados, Superyachts features 648 photo-filled pages of the most prestigious vessels in the world, as well as interviews with owners, builders and designers. Released in 2007, the book costs a hefty $3,950 and is bound in silver Italian silk. Only 1,000 copies of the book were created, so be careful with it on deck. Superyachts comes enclosed in a waterproof Lucite case, but with a weight of 26 pounds it probably won’t float.

Maltese Falcon megayachtThe latest yacht to inspire a literary counterpart is The Maltese Falcon, the 88-meter high-tech sailing yacht owned by Silicon Valley guru Tom Perkins. Limited to 5,000 copies, The Maltese Falcon: Art of Innovation chronicles the yacht’s creation. British publisher SuperYacht Art promises that many of the images in the book will be previously unseen. The book costs £55 (about $112) and shipping charges to the US are $55. Yacht owners could consider a pick up – shipping to UK offshore is only $22.

Athena yacht bookAnother impressive yacht with an equally impressive coffee table presence is Athena, the 90-meter sailing yacht owned by Netscape founder Jim Clark. Published by builder Royal Huisman Shipyard, Athena: A Classic Schooner for Modern Times features 240 pages of photos and narrative, costs £140 (about $287) and has an accompanying DVD. Hyperion, another of Clark’s yachts, is also the subject of a photo book.
